We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Simpson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Raven Wick Candle Company began as a passion project and creative outlet for me—a way to combine my love of beautiful fragrances, safe and thoughtful products, and the dream of building something meaningful. With the support and help from my husband Kevin, I took the leap of faith to bring this vision to life, inspired by the desire to create a simple yet elegant home fragrance brand rooted in quality, authenticity, and connection.

Our journey was fueled by a commitment to offer candles that are as safe as they are luxurious. We carefully select phthalate-free fragrances to ensure a cleaner, healthier burn for people and their pets—without the headaches and irritations often caused by chemically laden scents. Each candle is hand-poured in small batches using a premium coconut and apricot wax blend, delivering a warm, consistent glow and rich aroma that elevates any space.

The name Raven Wick draws from the symbolism of the raven in Norse mythology—messengers and guides who embody unity, kinship, and transformation. We wanted our candles to carry those same qualities, serving as a comforting presence and an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and create moments of peace.

What began as a hobby has grown into a deeply rewarding endeavor that has already brought us closer to our community and customers who value the same commitment to thoughtful craftsmanship. We are grateful for the support we’ve received and excited to share our story as we continue to grow.

What should our readers know about your business?
Raven Wick Candle Company is truly a labor of love. In addition to running this business, I also work full-time as a Talent Acquisition Manager for a CNC manufacturing company, serve as an Ambassador for the Severance Chamber of Commerce, and am one of the Market Managers for the Severance Farmers Market. Balancing all these roles has made growing Raven Wick even more rewarding.

Our company specializes in hand-poured candles crafted in small batches using premium coconut and apricot wax blends and phthalate-free fragrances. We’ve recently expanded our line to include wax melts, incense, and room & linen sprays, all carefully made by hand in our 300-square-foot basement workspace. When I started, we offered just 12 scents, and today, we’re proud to have grown to over 80 unique fragrances for our customers to enjoy.

One of the things that truly sets us apart is our focus on collaboration and community. We partner with local businesses to create custom engraved candle lids featuring their logos, and have produced branded candles for clients, employees, and special events across a range of industries—from real estate and law firms to nonprofits, farms, banks, and cleaning companies.

What I’m most proud of is the personal touch and intention behind everything we make. Whether someone buys a candle as a gift or to enjoy in their own home, I want it to feel like something special—thoughtful, safe, and crafted with care. For readers who are looking for beautifully made products that elevate their space and support a small, community-focused business, we’d love to be part of their story.

Fun Fact: Tune in to watch Wheel of Fortune on Thursday, October 9th to watch Nathan talk a little bit about his business!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit for a week, I’d make sure they experienced the absolute best of what Windsor and Severance have to offer—it’s such a special place with a perfect blend of small-town charm and unforgettable experiences.

We’d kick things off with a paddleboarding session on Lake Windsor, soaking in the mountain views and peaceful vibe. On another day, we’d grab our tubes and float the river, letting the Colorado sun do its thing while we laugh, relax, and enjoy the beauty around us. Evenings would be reserved for BBQ nights under the summer stars—there’s nothing quite like grilling with good friends, music, and a stunning sunset.

As for food (which is a major part of any good trip!), we’d definitely make stops at some of my favorites: The Hearth for a cozy and elevated meal, Tiho’s for amazing flavors and a fun vibe, and Luna’s Tacos when we’re craving something bold and delicious. We’d also swing by The Grainhouse to enjoy a drink and hang out with some of the most interesting and welcoming locals around. Of course, no trip would be complete without shopping and strolling through Downtown Windsor, checking out local boutiques, grabbing coffee, and supporting the community I love so much.

Windsor and Severance are full of hidden gems, kind-hearted people, and the kind of experiences that leave lasting memories. I’d want my best friend to leave already planning their next visit back!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I think about the people who’ve helped shape my journey as an entrepreneur, I feel incredibly fortunate to have crossed paths with some truly inspiring individuals. I want to dedicate my shoutout to a group of remarkable friends who’ve not only supported me but have walked beside me through the highs and lows of building a brand from the ground up. Their encouragement, guidance, and genuine friendship have meant the world to me.

First, a huge thank you to Mandy Mullen, owner of run.Windsor, whose leadership and mentorship have been a constant source of inspiration. To Misty Dockins of Windsor City Lifestyle Magazine, thank you for helping my brand gain visibility and always cheering me on. I’m also endlessly grateful for Laurie and Troy Heller, owners of Heller’s Kitchen, who have generously shared their business wisdom and support. Amanda Hiller of The Bottled Olive has been another amazing ally, always ready to lend insight and encouragement. And of course, Shawna Hendricks—thank you for being such a steady source of support and friendship.

This incredible group of business owners turned friends has taught me so much about the power of community, collaboration, and perseverance. I truly couldn’t have made it this far without their influence, and I’m endlessly proud and honored to be walking this journey alongside them. I’ll never be able to thank them enough for all they’ve done for me.
